  ppi

  In scanning, the pertinent term is ppi, or pixels per inch. For photos and other printed media, the maximum useful ppi is 600. For negatives and slides, however, much more is discernible, and they can be scanned at 2400 ppi. Ask for more detail.

• Black and white can be scanned 16-bit or 48-

  bit

  Bit depth refers to the tonal quality of the scan. The highest range of tones is achieved at 16 bits pers channel. Black and white requires only one channel, color requires 3, hence the difference of 16-bit vs 48-bit. Black and white can be scanned at 48-bit, but the file size will be three times as large. (if jpg format is chosen, channels will be 8-bit each)

  As the name implies, a lossless format does not “lose” data points. Jpg is not lossless because it compresses the data in order to have a smaller file size. This compression is not without cost-each color channel is reduced to a range of 8 bits, leading to less gradual transition in color changes. This is often fine for use online, but less desirable if you eventually want to print the image or zoom in for more detail.

• If negatives are numbered, then filenames will reflect those numbers
• If envelope/container is labeled, scan of label will be included free
• If negatives and photos are both included, then negative will be scanned but file tags or back scans can be made from information on back of photo for additional charge
• Rolls of film, including APS, will be cut into strips and returned in archival negative strip holder pages. Do not have the ability to scan and maintain in roll format.
